Blackberry

I am quite a large Blackberry fan. My daily phone for the time being is the Bold 9900 and my tablet of choice is the PlayBook (not my best decision). Make sure to check here for all news about BlackBerry and their possible downfall.

RIM Q1 Fiscal Results

Well. Poor RIM. Their company is going down the drain. They have had a 33% decrease in revenue since the last quarter. To start to save money they are going to have to cut around 5,000 jobs, which should lead to a saving of $1 Billion.

There are few websites which gave this news the attention that was deserved, this is huge news for the company, and they must be quaking in fear. With the new BlackBerry 10 devices launch being pushed back, people are going to get more and more fed up with RIM. I love my BlackBerry, I really do, but it was expensive, and the support for the OS is awful, and there are few things that it can do better than an iPhone.

So what does RIM need to do? First, open up their OS development. There have been several developers conferences but nothing really letting the developer having a say or input to the new BlackBerry OS. For the time being it looks like a scaled down version of the QNX operating system that can be found on the PlayBook. That needs to change. They need to do something unique. Collaborate with another company. Google have said that they would welcome BlackBerry! It is frustrating that BlackBerry have some incredible applications, such as BBM and their email which is unparalleled by any company. If you want an e-mail phone, BlackBerry is who you go to, there is no question about it. Yet when it comes to something other than a BlackBerry device it’s screwed up. Even the PlayBook. Over the course of the six months that I have had the PlayBook I’ve only ever used the email application to write or check my email once or twice. BlackBerry need to sort it out and sell people their amazing email that is done right. If they don’t do it properly, then nobody will use it. BBM would be a great app to have for iPhones, Androids and Windows Phones. You could purchase an annual subscription to BBM and that money would go to RIM and you could get your BIS set up on the phone as well.

It would be a change, but it is needed.

TL;DR

  • Total Revenue = $2.8Billion
  • Revenue Down 33% from last quarter
  • Cutting of 5,000 jobs
